The Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) has said that 90 per cent of crimes committed during Nigerian elections are carried out by politicians.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ town hall in Sokoto, organised in collaboration with the Federal Government and the MacArthur Foundation, PAACA’s Executive Director, Ezenwa Nwagwu, urged political parties, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to interrogate and familiarise themselves with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines ahead of the 2027 polls.
“Ninety percent of crimes during elections are committed by politicians. If citizens are empowered with the right information, manipulation becomes difficult,” Nwagwu said.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Sokoto State, Umar Yusuf Garba, represented by the Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Abdullahi Sale Dawa, described the forum as a platform to deepen electoral knowledge.
Also, Sokoto State NOA Director, Alhaji Babangida Kurfi, represented by Ms. Okeke Uche Ngozi, said the dialogue was timely, providing stakeholders with an opportunity to reflect on reforms, consolidate gains, and identify areas for improvement.
