United States President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping 25 percent tariff on countries that continue to do business with Iran, declaring that the measure takes effect immediately.

Trump made the announcement on Monday via his Truth Social platform, stating that the decision is final.

“Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” he wrote.
“This order is final and conclusive.”

The new policy is expected to have far-reaching implications for global trade, particularly for countries and blocs with significant economic ties to Iran, including China, India, the United Arab Emirates, and the European Union.

Analysts say the move signals a hardening of Washington’s stance against Tehran and could escalate economic tensions between the United States and several major trading partners.

The announcement comes amid fresh reports from international human rights organisations alleging that hundreds of people have been killed during a violent crackdown on protests against Iran’s government, which reportedly intensified over the weekend.

Trump has previously warned that the United States could take action if Iranian authorities resorted to widespread violence against protesters, framing his administration’s approach as both a security and human rights response.

The tariff decision is likely to intensify debate over the global economic fallout of renewed US-Iran tensions, as well as the balance between sanctions, diplomacy, and international trade stability.
