The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Abia State Branch, has joined counterparts across the world to commemorate the 2026 Global Surveyors’ Day, calling for increased inclusion of surveyors in Nigeria’s multi-sectoral development.

The celebration, which featured rallies across Aba and Umuahia, was held under the theme: “Surveyors’ Challenges in Multi-Sectoral Growth.”

The event was led by the Chairman of NIS Abia State Branch, Vincent Eze Ugorji, alongside the Acting Surveyor General of Abia State, Ikechukwu Prince, and the Branch Publicity Secretary, Chibuike Micheal Njoku.

Over 100 professional surveyors participated in the exercise, using the occasion to raise awareness about the critical role of surveying in national development.

Speaking during the rally, the association emphasized that surveyors remain indispensable in land administration, infrastructure planning, and property development. They noted that professional surveying ensures accuracy, prevents disputes, and promotes sustainable urban growth.

The NIS outlined key functions of surveyors to include preparation of survey plans for land registration and Certificates of Occupancy, property boundary definition and mapping, construction surveys, and dispute resolution.

Other critical roles highlighted include provision of geospatial data for infrastructure development, flood mapping and control, land acquisition processes, environmental and agricultural planning, as well as engineering support and boundary restoration.

The group stressed that failure to integrate surveyors adequately into policy and development frameworks continues to hinder optimal growth across sectors.

In a closing remark, the association urged property owners and developers to prioritize professional surveying services.

“Get a surveyor today and be happy you’ve got a landed property backed with a professional seal,” the branch stated.
