Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has formally announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), bringing an end to his leadership role within the party.
In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, the former Kano State governor said his resignation takes immediate effect. He described the decision as difficult but necessary in light of the evolving political landscape in Nigeria.
Kwankwaso, who served as the NNPP’s National Leader and Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the party and represent it at the highest level.
“Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.
He also appreciated the support of the party’s leadership, specifically acknowledging the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and members across all levels of the party.
Kwankwaso further extended his thanks to supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, noting their dedication to the party’s vision and mission.
Despite his exit, the former presidential candidate emphasized the need for continued collaboration among political stakeholders to build a more prosperous Nigeria.
