A chieftain of the Accord Party, Gbenga Olawepo Hashim, has alleged that Nigeria is gradually returning to what he described as the dark days of the late General Sani Abacha era.
Olawepo Hashim made the assertion in a statement issued ahead of the Accord Party presidential primary scheduled for May 30, 2026.
He accused powerful political interests of attempting to weaken opposition parties in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
According to him, there are deliberate efforts by influential figures to cripple opposition platforms and prevent the emergence of credible challengers to the ruling establishment.
“Nigeria is being dragged back to the Abacha years,” he declared.
The former presidential candidate also accused a senior figure within the Accord Party of allegedly orchestrating internal moves aimed at destabilising the party and hindering its ability to present a presidential candidate.
He said the current political developments bear similarities to the Abacha era when all registered political parties were allegedly aligned with a single power structure.
“We are seeing a replay of history, when political parties became tools for a self succession agenda,” he said.
The Kwara born politician further linked the alleged plot to influential figures within the administration of President Bola Tinubu, insisting that attempts to dominate the political landscape would not succeed.
“This coordinated plot by top officials will fail, just as the Abacha agenda failed,” Hashim stated.
