Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for retaining Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Zulum said the decision marks a historic moment for Borno State and the North East, noting that it is the first time an indigene of the region has become Vice President and been retained for a possible second term.
The governor spoke with State House correspondents after President Tinubu presented Shettima with the official certificate confirming his selection as the All Progressives Congress, APC, vice presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The presentation took place during a brief ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
Zulum disclosed that he sought the President’s approval for a delegation of leaders from the North East to pay him a thank you visit, adding that the request was granted.
“I am here to appreciate President Tinubu for renominating one of our sons, Senator Kashim Shettima, as Vice President and to seek his permission so that representatives from all the North Eastern states can come and pay him a thank you visit. Fortunately, the President has granted this request.
“On behalf of the governors of the North Eastern states, I want to appreciate him. By next week, we shall be preparing to come and see him. We have never had it like this. An attempt was made during Kingibe’s time, but unfortunately we did not get there. This is the first time our son has become the number two man in Nigeria, so we are very happy.
“We are also aware that the position does not belong to Borno State alone. It belongs to the entire Northern Nigeria, and I want to appreciate the region for accepting our son,” Zulum said.
