The Labour Party has urged opposition politicians and groups to unite under its platform ahead of the 2027 general election, warning that the creation of new political alliances could weaken efforts to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress.
In a statement issued in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, on behalf of the party and the G100 Coalition Group, the LP argued that strengthening an existing opposition platform would be more beneficial than establishing fresh coalitions.
According to the party, the Labour Party already possesses the nationwide structure required to mount a serious electoral challenge.
“Rather than creating new platforms or fragmented alliances, the national interest would be better served by strengthening the one opposition party that already possesses a tested nationwide network and institutional foundation,” the statement said.
The LP attributed its nationwide reach to its longstanding relationship with the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, noting that serving and retired civil servants provide the party with a strong grassroots presence across polling units, wards and local government areas.
It maintained that this network gives it an organisational advantage over other political parties, including the APC.
The party also expressed confidence in its electoral prospects, insisting it has the structure, membership base and a credible presidential candidate capable of leading Nigeria.
The Labour Party concluded by calling on opposition stakeholders to prioritise unity behind a single viable platform instead of pursuing multiple coalitions, arguing that a united front would improve the chances of success in the 2027 presidential election.
