Social Democratic Party, SDP, presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign over the freezing of the Osun State Government’s account domiciled with First Bank.
Adebayo made the remark while speaking with journalists after an event in Abuja on Thursday.
The controversy followed the decision of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to freeze the Osun State Government’s account just days before the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The anti graft agency confirmed the action, stating that it detected suspicious transactions in the state government’s account.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday by the President’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu directed the EFCC to vacate the court order freezing the Osun State Government’s account.
The development has prompted calls from some quarters for the resignation of EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede.
Reacting to the situation, Adebayo argued that responsibility rests with the President rather than the EFCC chairman, insisting that leadership accountability begins with the nation’s chief executive.
“Well, the person who should resign is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I don’t have enough evidence to suggest that the EFCC chairman should resign. The only person who is at fault here is the President himself because the EFCC is a very difficult place to work,” he said.
