The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has declared that he will never insult President Bola Tinubu, insisting that political differences should not undermine respect for public office holders.
Obi made the statement on Friday at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, themed “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”
The former Anambra State governor maintained that political disagreements should centre on government policies, leadership decisions and performance rather than personal attacks.
“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in the federal government. I’ve never abused anybody. Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect,” Obi said.
He, however, stressed that respecting political leaders should not prevent citizens and journalists from holding them accountable for their actions and decisions.
Obi urged media professionals to critically examine the records, statements and qualifications of politicians, particularly as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
He further emphasised that the character and conduct of political leaders could influence the values of society, underscoring the importance of responsible leadership and public scrutiny.
