President Bola Tinubu has approved a monthly transport allowance of N70,000 for public service workers across all levels as the Federal Government seeks to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
The approval came on Tuesday, October 27, following a meeting between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, led by its president, Joe Ajaero.
The development coincided with the expiration of the NLC’s four day ultimatum to the Federal Government over rising fuel prices and demands for a review of the N70,000 national minimum wage.
According to the Federal Government, the transport support will begin in November 2026 and continue for six months.
The government stated, “That transport intervention of seventy thousand naira (N70,000), commencing from November 2026, would be paid across all levels for a period of six months.”
The government also approved the payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears, effective from May 1, 2026. The arrears will be paid in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.
In addition, the Federal Government and the NLC agreed to establish a negotiation committee to begin discussions immediately on determining an effective date for implementing a new national minimum wage.
The labour union had previously given the government four days to reduce fuel prices and review the current minimum wage, warning of possible industrial action if its demands were not addressed.
The latest agreements are expected to provide temporary financial relief for public workers while negotiations between the government and organised labour continue over wages and the rising cost of living.
