THE All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo state, market women and coalition of Civil Society organizations in the state, have shelved their planned solidarity rally for the governor elect of the state, Mr Godwin Obaseki, citing the on-going coronation ceremonies for the crowning of the Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, Ehenede Erediauwa as the new Oba of Benin.
Obaseki Addressing journalists yesterday, a leader of the APC in the state, Lawrence Orkar, explained that “we wanted to tell Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who failed as a governorship candidate and his cohorts that hiring little children to protest will not help him. So we wanted to let them know that Edo people are united with Obaseki and are happy with the conduct of the freest and fairest election conducted so far in Nigeria by INEC.
“You would have seen all our market women, youths and civil society organizations coming to say no to PDP’s plan to create wrong impression that the election was rigged. But we are shelving it because of the respect we have for our traditional institution.
If the PDP does not respect our tradition we do, we hold it in a very high esteem and that is why we are shelving the rally in honour of our Royal father, the Crown Prince who will be crowned on the 20th of this month. “As you can observe, we have several traditional rites going on in the kingdom, so we don’t want anything to disrupt the process.
The day Obaseki was declared winner, we went round the streets celebrating with the people, after one week we started seeing contrived protest reminiscent of students protest and that cannot be a political reaction to the election that held on the 28th of September.
