Some concerned Niger Delta Citizens took over the GRA Junction/Waterlines axis of of Port Harcourt/Aba road in protest against the sealing of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The protest followed the sealing of the Commission’s head Office by the Rivers State Board of Internal Revenue over alleged nonpayment of accumulated tax to the tune of N50 Billion Naira over a period of 5 years.

The protesters were of the view that NDDC covers Nine States and cannot be held hostage by the Rivers State Government because of unresolved tax issues.

Some of the leaders of the protesting groups expressed worry over the situation saying that the action of the Rivers State government is capable of impeding development in the region.

According to them, NDDC is doing a lot to alleviate poverty in the region, foster infrastructural and economic development and empowerment the people, as such, it was unacceptable for one State out of Nines to stall activities of the Commission in other States as a result of local politics.
