The Transition Committee Chairman of Aba-South Local Government Area of Abia State, Okezie Erondu, has announced the slashing of his salary by 50 per cent.Erondu, who disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Umuahia shortly after presenting the letter conveying his decision to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, said the decision was a way of sympathising with workers who had yet to be paid because of the dwindling revenue.

He said he only took a cue from Ikpeazu, who penultimate week, took a similar decision.

Erondu expressed worry over the plight of workers and promised to protect the interest of workers in the council.

He said that a lot of sacrifices would have to be made by all and sundry as a way out of the current problem.

He said, “Governor Ikpeazu set the ball rolling by sacrificing 50 per cent of his salary. This is to show the people of the state that he is here to work and that he was not going to play with the development of the state.

“It is now the responsibility of those who truly claim to love the state and are interested in the welfare of the workers to also make some sacrifices, no matter how minimal. There is no sacrifice that is too small to bring about a turnaround.

“The sacrifice Ikpeazu has already made in Aba has endeared him to the people in the area. These are things that I saw and decided to make my own little sacrifice in solidarity with him.”
