Man Arrested for Raping 8Months Pregnant woman in Lagos

The police in Lagos has arraigned 25-year-old Welder, Monday Maule, before a Lagos Chief Magistrate’s Court, sitting in Tinubu for allegedly raping an eight months pregnant woman, Chinyere Samuel.Maule, who allegedly committed the offence on February 23 at Friends Colony, Agungi in Lekki area of state, was arraigned on a count charge of rape.

According to the prosecutor, Sergeant Daniel Ighodalo, the accused person who is a neighbour to the victim committed the crime at about 4:30am to 5am, while she was asleep.

Ighodalo also said that the accused person unlawfully and forcefully had carnal knowledge of the victim, one Chinyere Samuel, aged 23, a mother of four, who was eight months pregnant. He added that the husband of the victim was not around when the incident happened.

The prosecutor further informed the court that the victim who was deeply asleep, did not lock her door, but woke up with pains in her private part and her face, and that she was also dizzy, and then raised alarm before the defendant was arrested. And that she was unable to fight the defendant because of her condition.

The prosecutor told the court that the offence committed by the accused is contrary to and punishable under section 259 of the criminal law of Lagos state of Nigeria 2011.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

Following the plea of the accused person, the prosecutor urged the court to remand him in prison custody pending trial.

However, the presiding Magistrate, Olaitan Ajayi granted bail to the accused person in the sum of N250,000, with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate also ordered the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward it to the office of Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

She further ordered that the accused be remanded in prisons’ custody pending the time he is able to meet the bail condition.

The case has been adjourned till March 23,2015 for commencement of trial.
