A suspected cult member, Agwu George, who was arrested by the police in Enugu State, said smoking hemp enabled him to be more efficient on his job.George, 22, an alleged member of the Vikings Confraternity, was nabbed by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad on July 11, 2015.The native of Uburu Ozara in Ebonyi State is also an iron bender who operates mostly in the Ogui/New Layout area of Enugu.

George was arrested after he was found to be in possession of a single-barrelled gun with live cartridges by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

However, his accomplice, identified as Nebulon, escaped.

George, who was also found with hemp, said the substance helped him to effectively discharge his duties as an iron bender.

“I smoke hemp in order to be more efficient as an iron bender. Hemp helps me to remain effective in the iron bending business. The substance is not for criminal purposes,” he said.

George further revealed that he joined the cult group in 2008, when he was in Junior Secondary School three.

According to him, a family friend, one Sunday Onu, coerced him into joining the group.

George, however, lamented that he had not gained anything from the cult group. He noted that he had yet to understand the benefits of cultism.

He said, “I have not gained anything as a cult member. In fact, I have yet to understand the benefits of joining a cult group. I think the youth should shun cultism.”

Another cultist, Ezeiro Chukwuebuka, from Aguabosi Ugwuoba in Oji the River Local Government Area of Enugu State, was also nabbed by the SARS operatives.

Ezeiro, 24, a mason, stated that he joined the Vikings confraternity in 2012 while in secondary school in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

It was gathered that Ezeiro was nabbed on July 11, 2015, at Maryland Secondary School, Enugu, venue of a meeting that was to produce him as the new leader of the cult group.

It was learnt that the former leader ran away, abandoning the confraternity.

It was also gathered that fracas erupted at the meeting after Ezeiro, armed with a double barreled-gun and live cartridges, moved to assume the leadership position of the group.

Following stiff opposition from rival contenders, Ezeiro was inflicted with machete cuts until he lost consciousness.

He was eventually picked up when the SARS operatives, who were on the trail of the cult group, stormed the venue of the meeting.

The spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, said Ezeiro had recovered from the injuries, and was now pleading for forgiveness.

“George and Ezeiro are helping the police with information in ongoing investigations into the criminal activities of the cult group,” Amaraizu added.
