A human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has petitioned the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, asking him to probe the Federal Government over the $4bn recovered from the late maximum ruler, Gen. Sani Abacha.
Falana said in a letter on Saturday that the Federal Government had failed to account for the money which was recovered in tranches between 1998 and 2014.
The senior advocate said the Socio Economic Rights and Accountability Project had approached a Federal High Court to compel the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to account for the recovered funds but that despite getting the court order, the OAGF refused to provide the information.
Falana said, “From 1998 to 2014, the Federal Government successfully recovered over $4bn from the Abacha loot. However, based on the refusal of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to account for the recovered loot, SERAP applied to the Federal High Court for an order of mandamus
“Even though the court granted the order, the Federal Government has failed to account for the recovered loot. In the circumstances, we have submitted a petition to the EFCC to investigate the alleged criminal diversion of the recovered loot.”
