Landslide Cause Chaos In Anambra Community, As Residents Flee Homes

There was panic in Ubaha village, in Nanka community, in
Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State when residents fled over a
major landslide.

Residents vacated the community over fear of a major
disaster, due to the landslide which occurred after a down pour, at night, over
the weekend which caused a portion of land to cave in with an uninhabited
Daily Sun gathered that the recent landslide automatically
cut off the road linking Ubahu and Umudala villages in Nanka community.
It was also gathered that nobody died in the disaster as the
area affected had been deserted following persistent landslide, leading to the
area being relegated to a farm settlement.
A minor landslide also hit the same area in 2008 which
displaced a widow, Mrs Bridget Eze when her residence was partially destroyed.
The incidence, it was said, attracted the presence of then governor, Mr Peter
A resident of the area, Mr. Paschal Chiedozie said the
effect of the landslide has devastated residents, further driving them far away
for fear that it may escalate.
“That area where that thing happened used to be where we
lived, but because of persistent threat, we had to all leave and today, that
place is a farm settlement.
But with this recent one, most people have left
their homes again in fear,” Chiedozie said.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment,
Romanus Ejikeme told our correspondent at the
weekend that he was not aware of the recent landslide, but recalled that it has
been a persistent occurrence in the community.
“With what you have just said, we will send our team there
now to go and see the extent of damage and also know what could be done.
As for
Nanka community, we know that the Federal Government is doing a lot at
Isiakpuenu gully. That is all I can say for now until we see things for
ourselves,” Ejikeme said.

Nanka community has been in the news over the years
following the devastating gully erosion at the area which has sacked many homes
and farm lands.
This has attracted the Federal Government, through its agency,
NEWMAP who has visited the area to find lasting solution to the menace.
