The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has said claims by Rivers State Governor, Mr Nyesom Wike, that men of the Nigerian Police are involved in criminal activities in the state do not make sense to him.

Idris told journalists at the Presidential Villa in Abuja that it is disheartening when people in the position of leadership make such sweeping allegations.

Although the IGP admitted that “everybody has a right of self-expression”, he rubbished the governor’s claims, adding that it is important for people to “read between the lines”.

“Obviously, I have to deny that. That is nonsense,” the IGP said.

The IGP was at the Presidential Villa to meet with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to discuss the security challenges in the country, especially the tension in the southeastern part of the country.

Governor Nyesom Wike had on Wednesday alleged that most of the kidnappings and armed robbery taking place in the state are perpetrated by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

“They fight crime in some state, but they refuse to fight crime in Rivers State. We are done with the elections, but they are using SARS to create insecurity in the state,” the governor told journalists at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
