The Nigerian Army has confirmed an attack that took place on Wednesday, along the Benue-Nassarawa state border by unidentified militia during which one of the gunmen was killed.

The force in a statement signed by the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, said they were alerted to the presence of the militia while on a joint clearance operation in the area.

According to the statement, the criminals were setting houses on fire in Igacha village, about 4 kilometers away from Kadarko town.

Troops of 72 Special Forces Battalion and 177 Guards Battalion then immediately responded by mobilising to the area to stop the arson and apprehend the perpetrators.

On sighting the officers, however, the militia abandoned their mission, scampering for safety in different directions. It was in the process that one of them was shot and killed while the others escaped with gunshot wounds.

The Army PRO says a cordon and search operation is still in progress in the general area with the view of tracking the fleeing armed criminals.

He also appealed to residents of the general area to be on the lookout for such wounded persons and report any relevant information to the security agencies.
