—No fewer than 14 persons were involved in a multiple auto accident along the Giri axis of the Abuja-Lokoja Expressway in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT, yesterday afternoon, leaving two persons battling for their lives due to head injuries.
The accident occurred when a Sienna car carrying eight persons from Jos, the Plateau state capital, to Lagos rammed into two vehicles from behind in quick succession.
John Irieguna, the driver of the Sienna with number plates BUU 811 ZL, said he couldn’t avert a collision with one Nissan Almera marked ABC 350 XL, which he followed for about 10 minutes before it made a sudden stop on the fast lane of the highway.
“I couldn’t help bashing into the Nissan Almera, when the driver I had followed closely for about 10 minutes stopped suddenly,” he said. In a bid to regain control of his vehicle after the initial collision with the Nissan Almera, Irieguna hit another vehicle, a Toyota Corolla carrying a family of four, before skidding off the highway.
The semi-conscious driver of the Nissan Almera, Oladele Aluko, was heard muttering “Take me to Osun! Take me to Osun!” The lone passenger in his vehicle was one of the two who sustained severe head injuries.
The other critically injured was an unidentified boy of about 10 years. The Toyota Corolla, marked ABC 281 HA, belonged to one Benjamin Jibrin. Spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Bisi Kazeem, said he could not confirm any death, but that the critically injured have been taken to Specialist Hospital, Gwagwalada.
