The Lamentations of Godswill Akpabio: The Locus Classicus for Selective Amnesia

We have read the letter by Chief Godswill Akpabio addressed to the world, wherein he strenuously but unsuccessfully attempted to rewrite history by denying reports of things said and actions taken by him. Well it is common knowledge that liars, comedians and those imbued with talkative tendencies do not have a good memory. How would they? when they speak before they think, and their speech is intended to either deceive or entertain people.

If not for the mention of our party’s name in that ill conceived missive, we will not have bothered with a reply, because God and the electorates have served Chief Godswill Akpabio replies that will last a lifetime. Those replies have revealed to the world that no one owns Akwa Ibom, except the people who chose per time who they voluntarily queue behind and where or if such a person takes them for granted, they react accordingly. It is therefore with a great reluctance that we are offering this reply. The ideal place for Akpabio to say all he wants in the circumstance, is the Tribunal, where we hope to meet him in the witness box, during cross examination. There are questions we really will like to ask him on oath, because it looks like it is only on oath that his memory will be tickled back to life. There we will test to know the state of his mind and to confirm whether his descent is beyond redemption. We earnestly await that day.

Now to the issues raised by him, wherein our party ,the Peoples Democratic Party that made Chief Godswill Akpabio all he lays claim today, the party that made available its winning machine for Chief Akpabio. That same party that gave his name instant recognition, by granting clearance for the then Governor Obong Victor Attah to appoint him as a Commissioner, from where he became who he was before he, with his hands, signed and collected his certificate of retirement from his people. That is the party, that he takes the delight in abusing with reckless abandon, yet he demands loyalty or better but slavish followership from people whom he merely supported during his administration. What else can be the best example of hypocrisy. He mentioned the many things he did for the Christian community and superficial display of Christianity as a basis to why he couldn’t play God. This claim can only deceive readers who do not know Chief Akpabio, but the Bible has a reply for him in 1 Sam. 15: 22-23. He derided the Clergymen who dined with him for eight years but later prayed against him. In reply, we remind him that the same Prophets who crowned Kings of old, were the same channel used to dethrone them. Chief Akpabio should bother less about the channels and bother more about the source(God). If Chief Akpabio has an ounce of respect for God has he claims, he would have known that no one can be enthroned or dethroned except God approves. We enjoin him to accept his dethronement as an act of God. Playing God isn’t just about words, it’s also about actions. How can he say he didn’t play God, when he travelled all the way from his local government area and went to Nsit Ubium to declare that Onofiok Luke will not win elections and nothing can change it. Was that not playing God, or will he also deny that he said that? Or will he deny the Warsaw statement and Federal might boasts? Or was the promise to deliver Akwa Ibom to the President in three hours, not a sign of a Superman, desiring deification?

Chief Akpabio mentioned the accident he had in Abuja but added that the details were suspect. What is the suspicion about a perennial late comer heading to the airport late and beating the traffic light to hit another car belonging to the American Embassy, which was cleared by the traffic light? Except suspicion means something else, there is nothing suspicious about it, in fact it is confirmatory of the clear result of indiscretion and as the out going Senator is aware, it is not the first time his convoy is involved in an accident, due to over speeding to cover for lateness in departure. He may have forgotten that he granted an interview then where he stated exactly the cause of the accident and appreciated those stood by him(Governor Udom Emmanuel inclusive).

In all, while we understand the emotional trauma that has befallen outgoing Senator Akpabio, we cannot sympathize with him, because his situation is self inflicted and can only be cured by deep introspection and self purge, not self pity, deceit and delusion. He should learn from the biblical character Nebuchadnezzar, who when he found himself where Akpabio has placed himself, humbled himself and sincerely sought the face of the Lord and turned from his past ways.

Finally, he should at least try to exercise the current Senatorial mandate till it expires; we do not see him at sittings of the Senate since he lost elections. He has by his actions robbed his constituents the right to be heard on the critical issues currently being discussed at senate. The Bible says that he who is diligent in little shall be diligent in plenty. Senator Akpabio should sincerely assess his performance as a Senator and determine whether he was deserving of a second term. He should recall that his colleagues in the PDP had made moves to remove him as the minority leader, citing non-performance and political infidelity( later events have proved them right). Talking about robbery, we ask that the rejected Senator should seek forgiveness from God and the many families he caused pain, families like those of Captain Iniobong Ekong(Rtd) whom he instigated his abduction and detention by the military; Hon. Inokon and the Essien Udim PDP chapter Chairman whom he with his bare hands assaulted and caused their families trauma; Itoro Ekpe who was assaulted by his thugs and sustained head injuries, causing his family untold hardship. The cries of those people and others who were victims of Senator Akpabio’s war on his people, is permanently before God and in due course, divine revenge will occur. No amount of self deceit or lamentations can turn around the impending punishment headed the way of villains.

Signed:
