The Umuahia North Local Government Area says its current move to end the perennial street trading and indiscriminate loading of vehicles and tricycles within the Isigate axise were not aimed at dislodging the downtrodden’s means of their livelihood.

The council had today, April 1, began the enforcement of order prohibiting street trading and indiscriminate loading and picking of passengers within the congested Isigate.
Mostly affected areas include Warri Street, Owerri and Umuwaya roads as well as other adjoining streets within the city centre where petty traders and commercial vehicle operators have converted to markets stalls and mini parks.

Speaking after inspecting the extent of compliance, the deputy chairman of the council, Hon Eze Okwulehie who personally supervised the execution of the order for traders, commercial tricycle and vehicle operators in the capital city of Umuahia to move out of the roads in transacting their businesses said that the measure were not aimed at taking away food from the tables of petty traders and other sundry pro poor that ply their trades there.

Eze Okwulehie had last week announced the new adjustments directing the traders to move some metres away from the roads while space were created for Keke riders and commercial bus drivers who hitherto had been loading along the Isigate area of the capital city

Hon Okwulehie who spoke to journalists stressed the need to clear up business activities from roads and streets around the city centre as these activities had virtually taken over major roads/streets in the heart of the town thereby causing traffic build up around the area.

According to him, there was need to sanitize the capital city positing that the orderliness at some South-East states capitals were effected by human beings and assured that the same cleanliness and orderliness in the Umuahia capital city would be witnessed before long.
