As we continue to find out the particular Chikwendu Kalu that wants to retain the position of the Speaker in the forthcoming 7th Assembly, we would want the Chikwendu to clarify whether he was the one that alledgely ordered his security men to shoot an innocent Road Safety officer who was on duty just because the officer stopped the Speaker’s wife’s car.
According to the Punch newspaper published on July 16, 2017 with the headline “Policemen shoot FRSC officers for stopping Abia Speaker’s wife’s car”, the news has it that
“The Abia State House of Assembly Speaker, Chikwendu Kalu, on Saturday, allegedly ordered some policemen in the state to shoot officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps on patrol.
Eyewitnesses told SUNDAY PUNCH that the speaker gave the order when the FRSC officers stopped the Sport Utility Vehicle his wife was travelling in along the Umuikaa/Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway. ‘When the vehicle was stopped (by the FRSC officials), the driver refused to stop, only for him to stop at a distance.
The driver reversed the vehicle and it was discovered that a woman in the passenger seat in front, is an officer of the Department of State Services attached to the governor’s wife. The DSS officer ran towards the officer who stopped the vehicle, held him by uniform and dragged him to the ground, accusing him of hitting their vehicle,’ a reliable source told SUNDAY PUNCH.” The source equally added that the Speaker’s wife allegedly joined the policemen to beat the official.
“One of them called the speaker whose village is nearby. He then came with some policemen. He ordered them to shoot the armless officers who were sitting inside the patrol vehicle and mercilessly beat up the team leader.
“The policemen also forcefully opened the patrol vehicle and went away with the battery. They left the team leader and the other officials that were shot on the road. Other road users helped them to the hospital,” said the source. You can imagine that! Is that the Chikwendu they are really talking about?
Of course, the security men that did the ugly job of shooting an innocent officer on duty have since been dismissed from service and Mr. Speaker and the wife cannot give the foolish security men job. The FRSC on her part has insisted that Chikwendu and wife would not go free but must face the law. According to a news published online by The Eagle Online with the headline “Assault: Prosecution of Abia Speaker ongoing – FRSC ” The Federal Road Safety Corps assured that the case of alleged assault on its officials by the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Chikwendu Kalu, and his wife, Victoria, would not be swept under the carpet.
The story says that the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, gave the assurance at a strategic session with FRSC Zonal Commanders while responding to reporters’ questions at the forum, assured the public that the matter was in court and would be pursued to a logical conclusion.
He said: “The case is in court. We have taken him to court. Both himself and the wife. I assure you the case will not be swept under the carpet. My personnel cannot be assaulted like that” He continued “One of the bullets almost got to the spine of one of them. So, the case is going on.”
Apartfrom that case, Mr. Speaker’s claim to have spent 300 million naira on a project in the House for a project that ought not to take up to 50 million naira to complete is still an issue. The issue of the project and his roles will soon be investigated.
If it is this same Chikwendu Kalu that the canvasers are talking about, we think, they should look for another ‘Chikwendu Kalu’ to campaign for. A man that cannot be acceptable in his political Ward not to talk of the entire constitutuency cannot boast of having the clout to retain himself in office as a Speaker.
Mr. Speaker should prove to Abia public that these allegations against him is false. Let him defend the issues raised by his kinsmen; visa-viz his alleged theft and stealing of his client’s money, his disbarment and reacall process.
He should defend APC candidate’s accusations against him, his roles on shooting an innocent FRSC Officer on duty and that of 300 million naira embezzlement. When Chikwendu and his team defend these, we will know whether he can convince his colleagues to vote him in as the Speaker of the 7th House of Assembly.
Chikwendu and his media men should know that IKUKU is ‘gracified’ and is coming in as the Speaker of the 7th Assembly.
