The Abia State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called off their two week old industrial action and have ordered their members to resume work with effect from today, Monday, 17th June, 2019.

This follows the personal intervention of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who led the talks with the teachers.

In a Communique issued yesterday, Sunday, 16th June, 2019 and signed by Comrade, Elder Kizito Agwu Kalu, State Chairman of the NUT and Comrade Nnenna Okonkwo, State Secretary, on behalf of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) thanked Governor Ikpeazu for what they referred to as “his quick and prompt intervention over the teachers’ demands”.
The Communique further stated that “SWEC -In- Session wishes to place on record that it was when our amiable Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu intervened that NUT demands were sincerely and passionately looked into with a view to permanently resolving it amicably”.

Governor Ikpeazu is grateful to the Teachers for their maturity, friendship and commitment to the development of primary and secondary education in the State, noting that the consistent first class performance of Abia State in external examinations in the country is a clear testament to the dedication of our teachers working in synergy with his administration.
Ikpeazu reaffirmed his personal commitment and that of his administration to the strengthening of our educational system through a holistic development strategy with the welfare of teachers at the fulcrum.
He urged the teachers to ensure that in their usual pragmatic manner, lost grounds occasioned by the strike action will be covered to ensure that pupils and students will remain in good standing, especially now that external examinations are imminent.

Onyebuchi Ememanka, Esq
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.
