ABSU Admits 7,800 New Students At 38th Matriculation Ceremony

A total of Seven thousand, eight hundred (7,800) new students were formally admitted into various programs of the Abia State University during her 38th matriculation ceremony for the 2019/2020 academic session which held, on Tuesday, 18th February 2020 at the University pavilion.

The distribution of the matriculating students is as follows –
1. Postgraduate
PhD 116
M.sc 187
PGD 54
2. Undergraduate 6,842
3. Institute for Continuing Education, (ICE) 124
4. Affiliate Schools
– Peace land College of Education, Enugu 457
– Hugh Goldie Lay/Theological Training Institution, Arochukwu 20

In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Distinguished Professor E. Uche Ikonne, congratulated the students for gaining admission into an institution of “Excellence and Service” like Abia State University, which has an academic and administrative structure that will enable them fulfill their career dreams in life, and advised them to abide by the rules and regulations of the University, live by the words and spirit of their matriculation oath, as well as keep healthy company in order not to be lured into membership of illegal groups that will truncate their academic pursuit.

He expressed joy that the University has continued to expand its academic base by the addition of new programs like Civil Engineering and Pharmacy, stressing that all the courses offered in the University are in good standing in terms of accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and regulatory bodies, while the students graduates as at when due and inducted into their respective professional bodies.

Professor Ikonne further assured the students of their maximum protection and security from any form of molestation, with the tight security network and firm administrative structure of the University.
“I have assumed the status of your “senior course rep” even as your Vice Chancellor so as to remove all bureaucracies to attend to your problems. You can always reach me via SMS only, through a dedicated phone number which you will collect from the University Public Relations officer” he stated.

The Vice Chancellor used the forum to appreciate the eminent Governor of Abia State and visitor to the University, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, PhD for his unprecedented support and guidance, which has ushed in these golden moments in the history of the University, with the appointment of His Majesty, Orivirgh Professor James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, Tor Tiv Begha U Tiv, that added a noticeable quantum to the success of the administration, and the support of the Governing Council led by His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Adolf Wabara PhD, as Pro- Chancellor and Chairman of Council, that has engendered discipline, peace and harmony among the rank and file of the University community.
He assured Parents, Guardians, and friends that the University is equipped in human and material resources to transform their children/wards into distinctive professional skilled and decent citizens of this country, and called for their support to always provide the required parental guidance.
The highlights of the ceremony includes the administration of matriculation oath on the students by the Acting Registrar, Mr A. O Nkama, a homily by the Rt. Rev.

Manasses C. I. Okere (JP), Bishop, Anglican Diocese of Isuikwuato- Umunneochi, and the presentation of the matriculating students from different faculties by their Deans to the Vice Chancellor for formal admittance into the University.
