The Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Engr Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji over the weekend flagged off a free eye medical program for his constituents at Umuahia Central State Constituency.
The free eye care intervention program which held at the World Bank Housing Estate in Umuahia, is part of the Direct Touch Initiative of the Speaker, and according to him, “it is geared towards putting a check on sight deficiencies and related eye issues among the people.
“The rate of eye defects among the citizens is so high that special interventions like this one are required to help curb the issue especially when a large part of the affected population might not have the wherewithal to treat themselves. So it becomes imperative that an intervention of this nature is rolled out”, the Speaker said in his address to the beneficiaries.
A team of ophthalmologists ran checks, administered drugs and gave out medicated lenses to patients, as may be required.
The Direct Touch Initiative of the Member representing Umuahia Central State Constituency and Speaker of the 7th Abia State House of Assembly has over time covered other areas like the provision of water boreholes to communities, renovation of schools, provision of transformers to communities, scholarships, gifting of cash and empowerment items etc to constituents to help improve their standard of living.
The Speaker was represented at the venue of the free medical eye care outreach by his Chief of Staff, Mazi Kenneth Ezeigbo.
