The Zamfara State Government has revealed that it inherited over fifty billion naira as a liability from former Governor Abdulaziz Yari.

This was disclosed by the state’s Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General, Barrister Junaidu Aminu Kaura.

He said that the state is battling with court cases on various debts amounting to over N50 billion naira.

“it is very regretable that the state does not have any alternative source of funds apart from monthly cash allocation from Abuja,” he said.

The commissioner explained that the debt was largely inherited from the previous governments, pointing out that, “Because government is a continuous process, the present Governor has to find means of paying back the debt and move on with the management of the state.

“Two years back, Zamfara state government has engaged the auctioning of its assets worth over one billion naira for a debt of just sixty million naira which was supposed to be settled, but government of that time failed to take things seriously”

Kaura lamented that if Yari’s administration had taken the issue of debt repayment seriously, they should have settled the debtors out of court.

The Attorney-General maintained that despite the intervention of some important persons in the State, Yari’s administration had refused to take the appropriate steps of repaying the debt.

He solicited the support from the staff of the ministry in order to tackle challenges which included fake and fraudulently awarded contracts by past administrations.

Earlier, the Director civil litigation in the ministry, Barrister Surajo Abdullahi congratulated the commissioner and assured him of all necessary support and cooperation from the staff of the ministry.
