Tourism has become a vital sector for economic development in many countries and regions. Abia State, located in the southeastern region of Nigeria, is blessed with abundant natural and cultural resources that make it a potential hub for tourism development.

Unfortunately, the state has not fully harnessed its tourism potential, leading to missed opportunities for economic growth and development.

Abia State is home to several natural attractions, such as the Mini-Ntigbu River Ndoki, Azumini Blue River, Arochukwu Long Juju Slave Route, and Ngodo Cave and Waterfall, to mention a few. These natural resources offer ample opportunities for the development of eco-tourism, which is a growing niche in the global tourism industry. Eco-tourism is a form of responsible tourism that emphasizes the conservation of natural resources and promotes the well-being of local communities. Abia State through its Ministry for Tourism can leverage its natural resources as mentioned earlier to attract tourists interested in eco-tourism, which would not only promote environmental conservation but also create employment opportunities for Abia citizens.

Harnessing our tourism can immensely contribute to the growth of the State’s IGR and as well, attract foreign exchange. The money spent by tourists on accommodation, food and activities will serve as a means of income generation and also create employment opportunities. Apart from the economic benefits, harnessing our tourist attractions can help preserve our heritage sites and cultural landmarks.

The revenue generated from tourism can be used to fund the upkeep and restoration of historical buildings and artifacts, ensuring that they are preserved for future generations.
I implore the incoming administration of Dr. Alex Chioma Otti to do well to revive our tourist attractions.

My name is Charles Ikechukwu and I write from Abia State University
