Femi Falana, SAN, a human rights attorney, has encouraged the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, to think about putting President Macky Sall of Senegal and government officials under targeted sanctions, such as asset freezes and travel restrictions.

Falana stated that in order to address to address the nation’s worsening conditions with regard to human rights and the rule of law, ECOWAS should call an immediate extraordinary meeting.

The call came after Sall canceled this month’s elections, claiming a dispute regarding the candidates’ eligibility.

Falana claimed that Sall may be intentionally manipulating the country’s Constitution by postponing the elections.

He claims that this is being done to maintain power in defiance of the general public’s desires and will.

“Imposing targeted sanctions on Mr Sall and officials of his government is consistent with the provisions of ECOWAS treaties and protocols including article 45 (2) of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance,” Falana said in a statement.
