PDP Crisis: Bar Atiku, Wike from NEC meeting – Group urges BoT, governors

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who are concerned have urged the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), PDP Governors Forum, and Board of Trustees (BoT) to forbid Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike from attending the gathering.

Prior to the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which is set for this Thursday in Abuja, the groups issued this call.

They urged the BoT and PDP Governors Forum to act immediately to handle the prevailing political crisis threatening to undermine the unity and stability of the party, arguing that barring the two people will assist restore sanity and political stability in the party.

In a joint statement released following a meeting with other party stakeholders from 22 Northern States in Kaduna, the PDP Northern Professionals Movement and PDP Elders Support Group also blasted calls to remove Usman Iliya Damagum from his role as acting party chairman, citing the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the suspended chairman, Iyorcha Ayu.

They also stated that Damagum, North’s Deputy Chairman, had arrived in an acting capacity and would stay in that position until the court resolved Ayu’s case or until Ayu resigned.

Despite the departure of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike from the party following the 2023 general election, the organizations reaffirmed confidence in the party’s leadership, stating that the party is still strong.

“These are coming up because of the interest of some individuals who are eager to control the soul of our party unconstitutionally. These include people who have abandoned the party several times after the general elections.

“The task before the party leaders now is to identify the grey areas to address such and then return the desired peace and unity to the PDP,” the statement read in part.
