The Labour Party’s decision to dismiss its existing leadership and call a meeting of the National Executive Council led by Abia State Governor Alex Otti has reached a breaking point.
According to reports, the governor recently met with Julius, the party’s national chairman, and expressed his intention to call a meeting of the NEC for Saturday, August 31.
The governor contended that the party’s existing leadership had outlived their term in office.
However, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) opposed the action, saying that there is “vacuum in the leadership of our Party” at a meeting called by Abure on Tuesday.
The NWC insisted that the Party’s National Convention be convened on March 27, 2024, in awareness that the executives’ terms were set to end in June 2024.
The party questioned why Governor Otti, who was well-represented at the convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, by his deputy, is still advocating for the dissolution of leadership in a statement posted on its official website.
“The NWC must also state in addition, that the Labour Party is different from other Political Parties in the sense that it is not a party that is controlled by one man, woman or leader; neither is it a party that can be put in the pocket of one person.
“It is a party for the generality of the people. For these reasons, it was possible to record the successes it made in the 2023 general election.
“The outlook of the party made it possible for people like Dr Alex Otti to use the platform and win in 2023 after trying and failing in APC, PDP and even APGA. Therefore, the ideology, principles, ideals and outlook of the party must be maintained”, the statement added.
