The appointment of Senator Nenadi Usman as the national temporary chairman of the Labour Party has been deemed by Michael Ayuba Auta, the party’s 2023 senatorial candidate, as unlawful and void.

The Chieftain of the Labour Party claimed that Nenadi’s selection was made without consulting important party members, especially in Kaduna State, where he said the party achieved notable success in the most recent general elections.

The former Nigerian senator and minister of finance was chosen to chair the 29-member national caretaker committee that will supervise state congresses and the inclusive national convention. This decision has sparked controversy in various states across the nation. The meeting was organized by the LP and chaired by Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.

Auta bemoaned in a Kaduna statement that party patriots are ignored while those who destroyed the party’s prospects of gaining significant seats at the state and federal levels are revered as saints.

He continued by saying that Nenadi’s appointment was also against the party constitution and that due procedure was not followed because the constitution makes it explicit how appointments are to be made.

The Chieftain urged the party’s national leadership to revoke the appointment right now and schedule a stakeholders’ meeting to debate the party’s future while bringing resentful members on board.

He claimed that Nenadi’s leadership is not recognized because the party constitution clearly outlines the procedures for making appointments, and Nenadi’s recent appointment as acting chairman did not comply with those procedures.

The appointment of Nenadi, according to Auta, is blatantly against the party’s constitution. She called it a “backdoor appointment,” one that was made without consulting the pertinent parties, who invested their hard-earned money to support the party and make sure it quickly rose to prominence in Kaduna State.
