Many Nigerians, particularly young people, have occupied the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) towers in Abuja and demanded that Mele Kyari, the company’s group chief executive officer, leave immediately.

Citing Nigeria’s economic difficulties, long fuel lines, and soaring petrol costs, the demonstrators, organized by a few civil society organizations, or CSOs, characterized Kyari’s leadership as inept.

The demonstrators claimed that the NNPCL leader’s leadership had failed while holding signs with various statements, including “we demand the immediate resignation of Kyari.”

One of the conveners, Abdullahi Bilal who addressed journalists called for an end to “fraudulent fuel subsidy” and alleged importation of adulterated fuel, stating that it is a harmful practice that must stop immediately.

“Today, we call for the immediate resignation of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

“We demand the complete removal of the fraudulent fuel subsidy regime that has only served to enrich a select few. Full deregulation is necessary to introduce transparency, competition and fairness to our oil sector.

“We also demand an end to the importation of adulterated fuel into Nigeria. This harmful practice must stop immediately and those responsible must be held accountable for the damage caused to our vehicles, businesses, and livelihoods”, he said.
