The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his commitment to removing all shanties in Abuja that pose security risks, stressing that the safety of the capital city is paramount.

Speaking to residents of a shanty settlement in Wuye on Sunday evening, Wike highlighted the security concerns related to unregulated settlements with unidentifiable occupants. He assured that his office would not yield to any form of threats or blackmail in this matter.

To offer some assistance, Wike directed the occupants of the Wuye shanties to choose five representatives to meet with the FCT Ministry on Tuesday to explore potential support options.

“We’ve faced security challenges in the FCT, and our security agencies are working around the clock to keep Abuja safe,” Wike stated. “We’ve identified areas, like this location near a rail line, that pose security threats. Allowing settlements here compromises the safety of our train operations, and no responsible government would allow that.”

He added, “No amount of intimidation or threats will deter us from doing what is necessary to protect Abuja.”

Abba Garu, a representative of the occupants, shared that this recent demolition by the FCT administration was the 22nd of its kind, and he appealed for government assistance in securing proper shelter. Acknowledging that the structures were temporarily erected, Garu assured the Minister that they would not rebuild as they had done in the past and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage with Ministry officials for possible support.
