Two commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) have tendered their resignations following the Supreme Court’s ruling that nullified the October 5, 2024 Local Government elections conducted by the commission.
Prof. Simeon Emenike Weli, the Commissioner in charge of Political Parties/Monitoring, in his resignation letter addressed to the RSIEC Chairman, cited the recent legal developments and the situation within the commission as reasons for stepping down. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the growth of Rivers State.
Similarly, Dr. Lazbery Nyebuchi Nnah, the Commissioner in charge of Budget, Research, and Statistics, also submitted his resignation, stating that the unfolding events within RSIEC, along with the Supreme Court ruling, influenced his decision to resign. He wished for a better future for the commission and thanked RSIEC for the opportunity to serve.
Both resignation letters were copied to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). Their departures come at a critical time for the commission, as the Rivers State House of Assembly has recently invited the RSIEC Chairman and Commissioners to appear before it over their role in the nullified elections.
