Shehu Sani, a former federal legislator, has made arguments against the president having immunity without the vice president.

It can be utilized to witch hunt the vice president, according to Sani.

The comment follows the second reading of a bill in the House of Representatives that would eliminate the immunity afforded by governors and the vice president.

On Wednesday, the bill was one of 42 constitutional amendment bills that passed second reading in the National Assembly’s green chamber.

In order to combat corruption, end impunity, and improve accountability in public office, it eliminated the immunity granted to the vice president, governors, and their deputies.

However, Sani asserted in a post on his X handle on Wednesday that eliminating immunity for governors and the vice president would have the benefit of ensuring that no one would be above the law.

He said: “The positive aspects of removing immunity for VP and Governors is that nobody will be above the law; the negative aspect of it is that it can be used to witch hunt VPs and Governors. If a VP should have no immunity, whoever is the President should not have it also. There is a bill in the House of Reps that has now scaled second reading. You need to show interest in it before it’s too late.”
