Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88, and the Vatican is preparing for the conclave that will select his successor.

Referring to the Vatican, The pope’s funeral is set for this Saturday; it was stated that he passed away following a stroke and heart arrest.

Cardinals from all over the globe were said to gather in the Sistine Chapel to hold a secret vote to choose the new pope following nine days of mourning activities.

All ballots are burned following the procedure, which often takes two to three weeks.

A new era of leadership for the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide will be heralded by white smoke rising from the chapel’s chimney following the election of the new pope.

A few days later, there will likely be a liturgy to honor the 267th pope.

Meanwhile, the “camerlengo” (or chamberlain) will be Cardinal Kevin Farrell, an Irish-born American who became a naturalized citizen.

Farrell will be in charge of running the Vatican on a daily basis and getting ready for the conclave.
