The Vatican has officially announced that the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV will take place on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at St Peter’s Square.

The event, scheduled ten days after the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, marks a historic moment as he becomes the first United States-born leader of the Catholic Church, now serving over 1.4 billion faithful worldwide. World leaders and dignitaries are expected to attend the solemn occasion.

In a statement released by the Vatican, it was also confirmed that the new pontiff will meet with journalists on Monday, followed by an audience with diplomats accredited to the Holy See on Friday. His first general audience will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, and he is set to meet with members of the Roman Curia, the highest-ranking Vatican officials, on May 24, 2025.

Cardinal Prevost, a respected cleric and experienced Vatican administrator, was elected as the new Pope on Thursday, May 8, 2025, assuming the papal name Leo XIV.
