The trial of Simon Ekpa, a self-acclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra, commenced on Friday at the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland, where he is facing terrorism-related charges.
Ekpa was arrested in November 2024 by Finnish authorities on allegations linked to terrorism. He stands accused of inciting violence, funding terrorism, and contributing to unrest in southeastern Nigeria through his separatist campaigns.
According to Finnish prosecutors, Ekpa allegedly played a central role in sponsoring violent attacks carried out by unidentified armed groups in the South East region of Nigeria, under the guise of enforcing sit-at-home orders.
Prosecutors are seeking a six-year prison sentence for Ekpa, citing extensive evidence of his involvement in activities that they argue amount to terrorism under Finnish law.
The Guardian quoted the prosecutor, Sampsa Hakala, as stating, “We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications.”
Ekpa, who has been a vocal advocate for Biafra independence through social media and other platforms, has faced increasing scrutiny for his alleged role in fueling insecurity in Nigeria’s South East.
