Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has called for unity and coordinated national action to end the persistent violence in rural communities. His remarks followed a condolence visit to Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area, where more than 200 residents were reportedly killed in a recent attack allegedly carried out by armed herders.
Speaking to the grieving community, Ortom condemned the massacre and urged both federal and state authorities to intensify efforts in protecting lives and property.
“Our hearts are heavy with grief for the lives lost and the families devastated by this heinous act. We must stand together as a people and as a nation to ensure such barbaric acts are brought to an end,” Ortom said.
The former governor was accompanied by a delegation that included Dickson Tarkighir, the member representing Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency, Ezekiel Adaji, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State, as well as former aides and local community leaders.
Describing the incident as “unprovoked and unfortunate,” Ortom emphasized the need for improved intelligence gathering and strengthened community policing as vital strategies for preventing future attacks. He stressed that the perpetrators must be apprehended and brought to justice.
Ortom acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his recent visit to the state and for directing security agencies to act swiftly against those responsible for the killings.
He also extended appreciation to Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, for visiting the affected area and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting efforts that will ensure federal government pledges to the people of Yelewata are fulfilled.
