The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 151 associations have formally expressed interest in being registered as political parties.
Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, made the disclosure after the Commission’s weekly meeting on Thursday.
Olumekun noted that since the fourth update released on 23 July 2025, INEC has received eight additional letters of intent from associations seeking registration.
“This brings the number received so far to 151,” he said.
He explained that the details of the latest submissions, including proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses and interim leadership structures, have been published on the Commission’s website and other online platforms for public access.
According to him, with the portal for party registration now operational, INEC has commenced the shortlisting of associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the formal application stage.
“Details will be released immediately after the 16 bye-elections in 12 states scheduled for Saturday 16th August 2025,” Olumekun stated.
He further assured Nigerians that “the Commission shall continue to keep citizens informed on all its activities.”
