The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to stage a nationwide rally on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, as part of renewed pressure on the Federal Government to meet its long-standing demands.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday at the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti, the Zonal Coordinator, Adeola Oyebisi Egbedokun, said the rallies represent the union’s first major response to government inaction after years of dialogue.
Egbedokun noted that the demonstrations would take place simultaneously across universities nationwide, with academic activities suspended for the day.
He further revealed that ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) has given the Federal Government until its scheduled meeting of August 28 to respond, warning that the outcome of that meeting would determine the union’s next course of action.
“For over two years, we have kept faith with dialogue and refrained from strikes, but our patience has reached its limit. If the government continues to play games with the future of our universities, then it must bear the consequences of the storm that will follow,” he cautioned.
ASUU’s latest move raises fears of another nationwide university shutdown if the Federal Government fails to act.
