Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has accused President Bola Tinubu of pursuing aggressive taxation policies that place a heavy burden on Nigerians.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Adebayo described the president as “a clever tax collector,” alleging that the administration plans to introduce taxes on nearly every aspect of citizens’ lives.

He criticised Tinubu’s handling of the petroleum sector, particularly his decision to serve as Minister of Petroleum while the nation’s refineries remain inactive. Adebayo noted that despite huge funds spent on turnaround maintenance, Nigeria still relies on imported fuel, leading to policies he described as anti-people.

According to him, the shift from subsidy removal to other surcharges on petroleum products shows inconsistency in policy direction. He argued that Tinubu has abandoned the populist ideals associated with the SDP tradition for policies that favour financial interests.
