A faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party has announced plans to challenge the Federal Capital Territory High Court ruling that affirmed Dr Agbo Major as the party’s national chairman.

Factional National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ladipo Johnson, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, describing the judgment as a “miscarriage of justice” and “an assault on democracy”.

Johnson argued that the decision of the FCT High Court amounted to exceeding its jurisdiction, noting that the matter is already before the Abia State High Court and the Court of Appeal in Owerri.

“This act flies in the face of established legal hierarchy and the doctrine of stare decisis. A group of expelled members, acting on behalf of Dr Boniface Aniebonam, approached the FCT High Court seeking a judicial review of a matter already under consideration by the appellate court.

“Their actions clearly disregard the rule of sub judice and appear aimed at destabilising a viable opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections,” he said.

Johnson also criticised the court for allegedly overlooking procedural irregularities, stating that the party was not properly served with court processes.

He said the lapse undermined the principle of fair hearing and raised concerns about procedural integrity.

He further warned that the judgment could weaken public and international confidence in Nigeria’s judiciary at a critical period for the country’s democratic development.

Reassuring party members and the public, Johnson said, “This is merely a temporary detour orchestrated by those who fear the people’s will. We are taking all necessary legal steps to appeal this miscarriage of justice.

“We are confident that the appellate court will correct this anomaly and uphold the rule of law. The attempt to hijack this party will fail Nigeria’s democracy is bigger than the desperation of a few.”
