Anxiety is building across Nigeria as the Federal High Court in Abuja commences hearing on the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The legal proceedings began amid growing political speculation surrounding Jonathan’s possible return to active politics ahead of the next general election.
Reports indicate that the former president is expected to personally appear before the court on Friday as the matter continues.
The development comes less than 24 hours after Jonathan publicly hinted at a possible presidential ambition during an address in Abuja on Thursday.
The former president made the remarks after a group of supporters marched to his residence, urging him to join the 2027 presidential race.
Responding to the calls from supporters, Jonathan stressed the importance of patriotism, peace and credible elections in Nigeria.
“Presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely,” Jonathan stated.
A video circulating online on Friday also showed preparations at the Federal High Court as proceedings on the matter were set to commence.
The case is expected to attract nationwide attention, especially as political parties and stakeholders intensify preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.
