Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan against making a return to active politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ahmad, who served under the administration of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, warned that re entering the political arena could damage Jonathan’s long standing democratic legacy.
Reacting through a post on X, Ahmad stated that Jonathan had already played a significant role in Nigeria’s democratic history and earned national and international respect for peacefully handing over power after the 2015 presidential election.
“Goodluck Jonathan has already played his role in Nigeria’s democratic journey and left office peacefully, earning respect both locally and internationally.
“Pulling him into a project that lacks clear direction or public trust may only damage the legacy he worked hard to build,” he wrote.
Ahmad also claimed that those allegedly encouraging Jonathan to contest again were acting out of political desperation following what he described as the failure of their movement to gain widespread support across the country.
“I understand that those who are now seriously pushing and calling on former President Goodluck Jonathan to return to the political scene are doing so because they have finally realized that their movement lacks direction and the nationwide support needed to succeed.
“After all the noise and alliances, they are beginning to see that their agenda is not gaining the momentum they expected.”
He further argued that the move to draft Jonathan back into politics was unlikely to produce meaningful political results.
“Now, they want to drag Jonathan into a struggle that will not produce any meaningful result. We see this move as political desperation rather than genuine concern for the country,” Ahmad added.
