The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has approved the establishment of a National Selection Committee as part of preparations for its governorship and National Assembly primaries ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to the party, the decision was approved by the National Leader of the party following recommendations from the National Working Committee, NWC, to strengthen the screening and candidate selection process.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the committee was mandated to review, examine and evaluate reports submitted by the National Screening Committee and make final decisions regarding the screening outcomes of aspirants.
The National Selection Committee will be chaired by Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, alongside other members including Comrade Babatunde Ali, Alhaji Sidi Abdul Bomi, Alhaji Mohammed Bakin Zuwo, Dr Danlami Arabs, Barrister Fredrick E. Owotorufa, Chief Teddy Obey, Chief Barnabas J. Ejisi, Pastor Dr Mrs Adedayo Ekong, Yenusa Tanko, Dr Moses Paul, Buba Galadima, Aminu Abdulsalam, Danladi Abdulhamid, Professor Udenta Udenta, Barrister Reuben Egwuaba, Dudu Mamman Manuga, Dr Grace N. Onyekusiobi, Alhaji Shittu Mohammed, while Enekweizu will serve as Secretary.
The party urged aspirants, stakeholders and members to remain patient and cooperative, noting that the committee would operate within strict timelines to complete its assignments.
According to the statement, “This process aims to foster consensus building and ensure the selection of broadly acceptable candidates through a transparent, fair, and credible mechanism.”
The party further stated that only aspirants screened and approved by both the National Screening Committee and the National Selection Committee would be eligible to purchase nomination forms.
It added that where consensus among aspirants fails, the party would conduct direct primaries scheduled to hold between May 28 and May 30, 2026, in line with established guidelines.
The statement also disclosed that the National Selection Committee would be formally inaugurated on Monday, May 25, 2026, after which it would commence its official duties immediately.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, credible and inclusive candidate selection process aimed at strengthening party unity and positioning the party for electoral success in 2027.
