The House of Representatives Minority Caucus has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately overhaul Nigeria’s security architecture amid worsening insecurity across the country.

The call was made on Wednesday by Minority Leader Fred Agbedi during a press conference in Abuja, where he declared that “Nigeria is bleeding.”

Agbedi stressed that the protection of lives and property must take precedence over politics, emphasizing that every Nigerian life matters.

According to him, the primary responsibility of government is the security and welfare of citizens, as provided under Section 14(2)(b) of the Nigerian Constitution.

The caucus condemned the killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of terrorists in Katsina State and questioned the circumstances surrounding the release of his wife.

Members of the caucus extended condolences to the family of the late military officer and urged the government to develop a practical strategy for addressing the country’s prolonged security challenges.

The lawmakers also condemned the abduction of schoolchildren and their teachers in Oyo State, demanding what they described as an immediate and coordinated rescue operation.

“We call for an immediate overhaul of the national security architecture; though a state of emergency has been declared by the President since November 25, 2025.

“The nation requires funding on security intelligence, not propaganda, improve welfare for frontline troops, and not wildcards for appointees.

“We call for a launch a special military operation within 72 hours to rescue the school children and their teachers; no excuses,” he said.

Agbedi further stated that the caucus is demanding a full and transparent investigation into the abduction and killing of Major General Rabe Abubakar, arguing that Nigerians deserve answers on how terrorists were able to kill a senior military figure with apparent impunity.

The Minority Caucus also expressed concern over the recent Federal High Court judgment in Abuja ordering the deregistration of five political parties, a decision later overturned by the Court of Appeal.

The lawmakers urged advocates of political pluralism to remain vigilant against any future attempts to undermine democratic processes in Nigeria.

In addition, the caucus called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria to intervene in the conflicting judicial decisions relating to political party registration in order to preserve public confidence in the judiciary.

Agbedi maintained that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, must resist any attempt to undermine democratic principles, warning that the opposition would not accept an electoral process perceived to be compromised ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We, the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives will not be silent. We will not be intimidated. We will use every legislative instrument to hold this government accountable.

“To Nigerians, do not despair. 2027 will not be decided in a room or by compromised courts. It will be decided by you, the people.

“The opposition parties will stand with you. The opposition will not be muscled out. Nigeria will be rescued,” Agbedi said.
