The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has responded to recent remarks by Governor Abba Yusuf regarding the party’s decision not to field a candidate in the recently concluded Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Federal Constituency bye election.
Governor Yusuf, through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, had claimed that the absence of the NDC from the bye election signaled that the All Progressives Congress, APC, would emerge victorious in the 2027 general elections.
Reacting to the comments, Kano State NDC Chairman, Hussaini Isa Mai Riga, stated that the party remains focused and is not distracted by political statements aimed at gaining cheap advantage.
According to him, the party’s current focus is on building a strong, people centered structure across all 44 local government areas of Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“NDC is a party of strategy and discipline. Skipping one bye-election does not mean we are weak. It means we are focused on the bigger picture. Our priority is to consolidate our grassroots base, unite our members, and present credible candidates that Kano people can trust in 2027,” he said in a statement issued through his media aide, Adam Said Adam.
Mai Riga emphasized that the party has taken lessons from Kano’s political history and the broader Nigerian political landscape, insisting that it would not commit resources to contests that do not align with its long term objectives.
He said the party would instead channel its resources toward mobilization, political education, and policy development focused on addressing unemployment, insecurity, and the economic hardship facing ordinary citizens.
The NDC chairman expressed confidence that with growing support from Kano residents and the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement within the party, the NDC would emerge victorious in the next governorship election.
He also urged party members across Kano State to remain calm, avoid provocation, and continue to engage in lawful political activities.
Mai Riga further called on security agencies to remain neutral and ensure a level playing field as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Kano NDC chapter reaffirmed its commitment to democratic values, issue based politics, and the delivery of good governance to the people of Kano State.
