Hon. Sam Onuigbo Inaugurated President of GLOBE Legislators at UK Parliament

Former Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Hon. Sam Onuigbo, has been formally inaugurated as the President of GLOBE Legislators at a ceremony held at the United Kingdom Parliament in London.

The inauguration, which took place on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, marked a significant milestone for the international network of legislators committed to advancing climate action, sustainable development, and environmental governance across the globe.

Reflecting on the occasion, Hon. Onuigbo described the event as both historic and inspiring, noting that it also provided an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable achievements of GLOBE over the past 35 years in promoting legislative collaboration on climate and environmental issues.

The event featured goodwill messages from prominent global leaders and development partners, including former United States Vice President and GLOBE Co-founder, Al Gore, who commended the organization’s enduring impact.

Also delivering a message was Governor of Tokyo and former President of GLOBE Japan, Yuriko Koike, who encouraged the new leadership to build on the organization’s achievements and continue strengthening international cooperation.

Nigeria’s Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, CFR, also conveyed a message of support, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to global climate action and sustainable development.

Other notable speakers included Mr. Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR); Mr. Nick Mabey, OBE, Founder and Chair of London Climate Action Week and CEO of E3G; and Mr. Pablo Vieira, Head of the NDC Partnership, all of whom emphasized the importance of sustained legislative leadership in addressing global environmental challenges.

Speaking after his inauguration, Hon. Onuigbo pledged to build on the legacy of the organization and ensure that its mission continues to inspire meaningful action around the world.

“The charge is simple: we will not let this light dim,” he declared.

He expressed profound appreciation to Rt. Hon. Graham Stuart MP, former UK Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero, for hosting the event, and thanked his wife, Pastor Dame Princess Chinyere Onuigbo, friends, family members, colleagues, parliamentarians from different countries, and development partners who travelled from across the world to witness the occasion.
